G20 summit in Toronto

CityNews reporter Francis D'Souza from Mississauga has won a Gemini Award for his work with cameraman Alfredo Colangelo during the G20 protests in Toronto last summer.

D'Souza accepted the award for best local breaking news coverage last night as the Gemini Awards were presented at the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto.

"We keep talking about it, Alfredo and I, and we keep saying to each other, this was an experience that we'll never ever get to have again," D'Souza said after accepting the award. "And the fact that we were live right in the middle of that kettle at Queen and Spadina producing some - now - Gemini Award winning live television — it was just awesome. It was truly, truly magnificent."

D'Souza attended Ryerson University and holds a degree in radio and television arts. Prior to joining CityTV, he was an anchor with CTV in northern Ontario and hosted Plugged In! on Rogers Television.

In 2008 he anchored the Citytv newscast that won the (Radio Television Digital News Association) Charlie Edwards Award for best spot news.

He also teaches journalism at Sheridan College.

Also honoured last night was George Stroumboulopoulos, who grew up in Malton. He was named best talk show host.
