ECB may struggle to buy enough corporate bonds

(Reuters) - Any extension of the European Central Bank's asset-purchase scheme to include company debt risks running into a familiar problem - the ECB may not being able to buy enough of them to make a difference.

BERLIN (Reuters) - A handful of lawmakers in Angela Merkel's coalition are demanding a reform of the European Central Bank's voting system to strengthen Germany's influence, highlighting worries in Europe's biggest economy about the bank's bond-buying plans.

Rescuing the global economy

The state of the world economy could hardly be gloomier. Developments in the bond markets, particularly in the case of sovereign debt, are causing much anxiety among investors.

Little reassurance is offered by macroeconomic trends: in the US and Europe, employment data offer no room for optimism and even China’s growth rates have been affected by the slowdown in global trade. Business decisions are on hold and the risk of a double-dip recession appears ever harder to escape.
