Japan December manufacturing PMI at highest in more than 7 years

TOKYO: Japanese manufacturing activity expanded in December at the fastest clip in more than seven years as firms added workers at the quickest pace in over six years to help meet growing backlogs of unfilled orders, a survey showed on Friday.

The Markit/JMMA Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) rose to a seasonally adjusted 55.2 in December from 55.1 in November.

The index remained above the 50 threshold that separates expansion from contraction for the 10th consecutive month and reached the highest level since July 2006.

"Panellists commonly cited higher levels of incoming orders and higher demand from abroad," Claudia Tillbrooke, economist at Markit, said in a report.

"At the sector level, investments goods and intermediate goods producers saw sharp rises in backlogs of work whilst producers of consumer goods registered a marginal fall."

The employment index rose to 52.8 in December from 50.9 in the previous month to reach the highest since June 2007. The index measuring backlogs of work rose to 55.9 from 55.6 the previous month to reach the highest since April 2006.

The PMI index for new export orders fell to 55.7 from 57.2 in the previous month. The output component of the PMI index also declined to 58.3 from 59.0 in November.
