CANADA DAYBOOK: Election Campaign Second Half, Teck Earnings

The federal election campaign entered its second half following the leaders’ debates last week. Teck Resources Ltd. is estimated to post a first-quarter profit of 76 cents a share.

WHAT TO WATCH: *Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff kicked off the second half of their campaigns for the May 2 federal election in Ontario last week.

ECONOMY: *Statistics Canada is scheduled to release reports on foreign purchases of Canadian securities and employment-insurance claims for February in Ottawa at 8:30 a.m.

EVENTS: *Teck Resources, Canada’s largest base-metals and coal producer, is scheduled to release first-quarter financial results after markets close. The Vancouver-based company is estimated to report earnings excluding one-time items of 76 cents a share. *The Economic Club of Canada hosts Canadian Public Accountability Board Chief Executive Officer Brian Hunt. He will speak on the topic “Enhancing Audit Quality: The State of Auditing in Canada” 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Toronto. * Nederlandsche Bank President Nout Wellink is scheduled to speak in Toronto at an event to honor his retirement, and Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney will give introductory remarks in tribute to Wellink’s career at the Dutch central bank.

MARKETS: *The S&P/TSX index fell 0.2 percent to 13,799.12 on April 15. *Yields on two-year Government of Canada bonds fell 7 basis points to 1.75 percent at 4:20 p.m. on April 15 in Toronto. *The Canadian dollar was little changed at 96.00 cents per U.S. dollar at 4:23 p.m. on April 15. One Canadian dollar bought $1.0417.
